Last year marked the Lamont School of Music’s first Music Theater Cabaret, which opened to a sold-out audience.  This year’s show, Games We Play on Broadway, features a whole new set of show tunes from Broadway musicals including Damn Yankees, In the Heights, Floyd Collins and Chess.

“All of the selections relate to games: sporting games, card games, the game of ‘gossip,’ riddles, love, spelling bees, and even a rap song about winning the lottery,” says director Cathy Kasch, the 2010 recipient of the University of Denver’s William Driscoll Award for Teaching and Mentorship.

“Our goal is interdisciplinary collaboration between the music and theater departments, more exposure to the great repertoire of musical theater for our students and a fun, fantastic show for the community,” Kasch says. The Lamont School launched its Musical Theater Emphasis in Vocal Performance degree five years ago, and the program is gaining in popularity.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. May 24–25 in Hamilton Recital Hall at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is free but tickets are required, and sell out fast. Tickets are available in person at the Newman Center box office; they also may be reserved online or over the phone (303-871-7720) for a small service charge. Parking is free at the Newman Center parking garage.
