An annual event since 2007, Alumni Symposium gives alumni, parents and guests the opportunity to return to campus and take part in class sessions and lectures led by University faculty members. The weekend also features keynote addresses by distinguished alumni.
This year’s symposium will feature keynote addresses by alumni Paula Broadwell (MA ’06) and Eric Alexander (BA ’92). Broadwell, a research associate at Harvard University’s Center for Public Leadership and a New York Times bestselling author of All In: The Education of General David Petraeus, will speak at the dinner on Oct. 26.
Alexander, a skier, climber and mountaineer, is the author of The Summit: Faith Beyond Everest’s Death Zone, which chronicles his adventures leading the first blind climber to the summit of Mount Everest. Alexander will give his keynote address on Oct. 27.
Faculty-led presentations will be held both days and will include a variety of topics. In DU History in Pictures, University archivist Steve Fisher will present photos from his book University Park and South Denver, which shows the history of DU and the University Park neighborhood. Associate Professor Sheila Schroeder will discuss her upcoming documentary film in Woodstock West: Build Not Burn, and Daniel Connolly, of the Daniels College of Business, will lead an interactive seminar titled Exploring the Unintended Consequences of Technology on Society. Other course topics include psychedelic rock posters, the rise of Tibetan Buddhism in China, forensic analysis of human DNA and the American acting tradition.
Homecoming & Family Weekend kicks off Oct. 26 with parent events, campus open houses and a Pioneer hockey game. The Homecoming parade, the family-friendly fall festival and “Taste of DU” — featuring food from neighboring and alumni-owned restaurants — follow on Oct. 27, as does a second hockey game against Michigan Tech. Homecoming week also includes the Athletic Hall of Fame 14th anniversary celebration from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 25.
