DENVER—It’s no secret that gun-related violence and death has reached a breaking point in the United States—with 2012 ending as one of the deadliest years. The debate on gun control is raging across America and will be the topic of a panel discussion at the University of Denver on Thursday, Jan. 24 from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Newman Center, 2344 East Iliff Ave. The event, “Balancing Responsible Policy and the Right to Bear Arms,” is being sponsored by the University’s Institute for Public Policy and its CounterPoints series.
Moderated by The Honorable Richard D. Lamm, three term Colorado Governor and co-director of the Institute for Public Policy Studies, the discussion will include panelists from both sides of the issue such as Dudley Brown, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners; Randy Baumgardner, Colorado State Senator for District Eight; Arnie Grossman, political consultant, author and co-founder of SAFE Colorado; and John Head, lawyer and community activist.
“Seldom has a topic been so timely, or debated by such qualified spokespeople,” says Lamm.
CounterPoints was started in 2011 to bring together top policy experts and the Denver community. The events are held twice a year and topics range from school reform to immigration. A reception follows the discussion to allow audience members to meet the panelists and continue with the discussion in a more informal setting.
