Staff members honored at Convocation

Two staff members and a DU department were recognized for their service to the University at the Convocation ceremony on Oct. 3.

Cheryl Jackson, administrative and budget coordinator in the Office of Teaching and Learning, received the Outstanding Service Award, the highest staff honor presented each year. Recipients are noted for fostering and promoting collaboration and cooperation on the DU campus, demonstrated caring, responsiveness, accountability and courtesy in their interactions with others. In just the past year, Jackson has volunteered for two major committees for the Staff Advisory Council: the bookstore committee and the Staff Appreciation Picnic. She did so with a smile and a willingness to take on these projects, even though they were outside of her regular duties and a considerable amount of work.

In addition to her job duties and committee work, Cheryl also volunteers as a guide at a local museum and with junior high students through her church.

The Crimson and Gold Award went to Cathy Grieve, executive director of Conferences, Events and Special Community Programs. This civic engagement award is designed to honor and recognize an employee who displays outstanding commitment to and support of the University, exemplified by participation in volunteer activities within the University.

Grieve has displayed outstanding commitment and support to the University of Denver for decades. She has mentored more current and former DU employees than can be counted. She always is willing to lend her expertise and experience to DU staff, faculty and students. She serves as a sounding board and mentor to people at every level at DU.

“Cathy’s work promoting the University — and countless departments and organizations within it — is literally unparalleled at the institution,” says Provost Gregg Kvistad. “Her work is conscientious, kind, thorough, precise, and always produces an extraordinary outcome.”

The Office of Career Services took home the Quality Department Award, which is designed to honor and recognize the staff of a DU department for outstanding quality service to the DU community. The award highlights a department that has promoted quality service through open communication, creativity, ethical behavior, integrity, caring and close individual attention, and has gone beyond its established duties to foster quality service affecting not only the department, but also students, faculty, other departments on campus and/or the surrounding community.

The Career Center’s support of students and alumni goes above and beyond. Staff members are highly professional, friendly and helpful. The department provides quality service through open communication, creativity, ethical behavior, integrity, caring and close individual attention in its interactions with students, faculty, staff, alumni, corporate representatives and business representatives. These attributes are especially meaningful given the challenges students and alumni are facing in the current employment landscape.
